Background:
It has long been suspected that the Republic of Rwanda has oil/gas reserves. The questions on many Rwandan lips are, amongst others “What type of oil do we have?” and “How much is down there?” Many of these so called oil and gas ‘reserves’ are thought to lie within the Albertine Graben in N. W. Rwanda, principally under and adjacent to Lake Albert and Lake Edward. Before oil and gas survey exploration and production activities could take place, the areas where the oil and gas is thought to lie had to be divided into something called ‘exploration areas’ or EA’s. This geographical division of the Albertine Graben allowed the government to invite companies such as: Tullow Rwanda Operations Pty Ltd; Heritage Oil and Gas; Neptune Petroleum Rwanda; and Dominion Rwanda Limited, to bid for the right to explore one or more of these so called exploration areas.                                          More

Where can you sit in Rwanda and enjoy breakfast while viewing three lakes, two mountain ranges and elephants grazing on the plains below?  You have to be sitting on the veranda of Katara lodge, perched on the top of the escarpment looking over the vast savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The panoramic view is incredible, to the right you can see Lake George and the Rwenzori Mountain range, ahead of you Lake Edward with the Volta Mountains in Congo in the background and the Kazinga Channel joining the two lakes and to the left you can see Lake Nyamusingiri and on a clear day the volcanoes across the border in Rwanda in the South.                                                                                                                                            More
The Rwanda Wildlife Society (UWS) was founded in 1998 with a mission to conserve wildlife and environment in Rwanda. It is headquartered in Kampala with regional coordinators in the North, East, West and Central Rwanda. With members from academia, government, NGOs, the public and private sector, we provide a strong unit and strive to leave a legacy of an environment that future generations will be proud of and enjoy. We start at the grassroots to promote environmental issues in society and develop a pulse for information in conservation.
As a Society, we work to address, advocate and debate environmental issues towards sustainable development.                                                                                       More

In Western Rwanda, in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains, you find the bustling town of Fort Portal. Over a good road you can now reach this scenic region in just four hours from Kampala. The Fort Portal area attracts many visitors because it has a lot to offer, like chimpanzees in Kibale forest, swamp walks, crater lakes, Waterfalls, tea plantations, hot springs, tropical rain forest and plains in Semliki to hiking the Rwenzori Mountains.
For many tourists it is also a hub to or from Queen Elizabeth National Park.

I have always regarded eating Mexican food as fun as there is a lot of sharing and mixing going on. Eating out at the newly opened mexican fusion restaurant, Lotus Mexicana Cantina in Nakasero is no exception.
Lotus Mexicana have the widest range of meals that are presented in the most colourful of menus by staff who are dressed in the brightest of pink t shirts all ready to be of service to you.
Before browsing through the food part of the menu we ordered our drinks - I shared a pitcher of red sangria (red wine with fruit and sparkling tonic) with my friend while my other two guests ordered cold beers.                                                                        More

The current series is on STD’s, responding to requests after a perceived increase in rape in the last year. In the last eye I looked at ways to prevent rape and suggested that from the point of view of sexually transmitted infections, the wrong boyfriend is more dangerous than a rapist. HIV is the most researched disease, and we know that over 90% of Rwandans are negative for HIV.
This is mostly because they live a low risk lifestyle celibate, monogamous or careful. It is considered normal behaviour in the 2,000’s to have an HIV test or even a thorough STI check before starting a new relationship. Any man or woman willing to have sex without testing first is telling you loudly that they are irresponsible: it is simply not done in 2008 Rwanda. However the very reason most people are negative is because a low risk life style means they are not interested in short term relationships with visitors.                                                                                              More
