Kigali City - 100 Years

 

Kigali city marks one hundred years in existence:

Located at Rwanda’s geographical heart, Kigali is not only the national capital, but also the country’s most important business centre and main port of entry. It is the gateway and nucleus of the Rwandan economy.

Kigali City has a long history, in 1907 Germany, under the advice of Dr. Richard Kandt, the first European resident of Rwanda, set up an administrative residence on one of the hills in central Rwanda. Since then Kigali has not looked back, it has moved from being a colonial outpost into being today’s modern metropolis with an outlook of the modern world and a player in the globalised economy.

Although its land locked its Serviced by an efficient international airport and connected to neighboring Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi by surfaced roads. Despite such concessions to modernity, Kigali City retains the feel of a garden city, with a satisfyingly organic shape dictated by the verdant slopes over which it sprawls. The compact, low-rise city centre surrounds a busy, colorful market, and is studded with souvenir stalls displaying a wide range of lovingly executed local crafts and gifts to your memories alive.

Kigali City has made great strides in its recovery from the devastation of the 1994 war and genocide. Although damaged, the city’s structure has considerably recovered; today forms a unique strategic site for its inhabitants, investors and tourists from all over the world.

Among the safest and friendliest of African capitals, Kigali City is blessed with a moderate high altitude climate that belies its tropical location, and is conveniently located within three hours’ drive of the main tourist sites. The Rwandan capital provides both a comfortable and welcoming introduction to this land of a thousand hills and an ideal springboard from which to explore this magical country.

Kigali city is made up of three districts namely Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge. It is presently inhabited by approximately 1 million inhabitants. Our population is relatively young with the youth making up about 60%, with women making slightly more the 50%.

One of the major reasons why the city has been able to stay organised is its administrative statures, Overseen by the Executive Committee which is headed by the Mayor and deputized by two Vice Mayors; one in charge of economic and financial affairs and another in charge of Social affairs.

The city has sent its target to deliver better services, creating a safer, cleaner, and more competitive, modern city with expanding opportunity for sustainable development of its citizens and the country at large. By coordinating the activities of strategic plan, ensuring the security, follow up development activities at all levels, Follow-up of the implementation of the national policy in the districts.

Kigali City is opening and supports working with all spheres of our population, and value the contribution and role of the private sector in development. The economy is still virgin and many untapped opportunities across all sectors of the economy. Investment opportunities abound in such sectors as Energy, ICT, Food Processing, Tourism, Mining, and Leather products, Horticulture, Financial Services and Property Development. Most importantly, all these sectors are open to both local and foreign investors without restriction on the basis of nationality.
