I have to say I was totally impressed with all the restaurants in Kigali. Quality food is a pleasure of mine. One restaurant which stood out was ‘The New Cactus.’ It offers fabulous cuisine along with some of the most magnificent views in Kigali, overlooking the city’s hills and neighborhoods. There is the option of sheltered seating or tables and chairs set in the gardens where you can enjoy the warm fresh air.
The main cuisine is Italian but they also offer a variety of meat dishes; one of my favorite dishes is the brochette. It is served with crunchy veggies, chips and a choice of sauce – my sauce choice was the Gorgonzola! Yummy!
Whilst I personally did not taste the pizzas, the delight on the other patrons’ faces told me that the quality and taste of their chosen dish exceeded their expectations. The choices for dessert are numerous: the ice cream with hot chocolate sauce was the perfect end to a fabulous lunch experience.

The ambience and atmosphere is superb; excellent service is delivered by knowledgeable waiters whilst soft peaceful music is played in the background. The center point of the restaurant is the outside ‘BIG’ pizza oven, adjacent to that is the fully stocked bar serving ice cold beverages and coffee. A full choice of Italian, South African and European wines are on offer, all at acceptable prices.
The management takes a personal interest in the day to day running of the business and they are often found joining customers at the table to discuss the quality of the meal as well as the daily events whilst sipping a cold draft.
In addition to the above-mentioned great experience, ‘The New Cactus’ is the only restaurant we visited that offers free wireless internet access. This is a real benefit for busy people who are not confined to their office.
The New Cactus without doubt offers the patron a fantastic experience. The quality of the offering is inline with some 5 star hotels I have visited recently and the total bill cost does not create a huge dent in the pocket.
