The Eye is a free bi-monthly magazine containing listings and directories, maps, reviews, tour and travel information plus articles of interest. It highlights everything to do with Rwanda, from hospitals to hotels,shops to sporting events and from embassies to entertainment. It is distributed for readers and advertisers through national and regional airlines and tour operators, the airport information office, foreign diplomatic missions and NGOs, selected restaurants and bars, supermarkets and gift shops, all major hotels in Rwanda, the Rwanda Golf Club and government offices including the Rwanda Wildlife Authority.

“Little did I know then that by setting up two small tents in the wilderness of the Virungas I had launched the beginnings of what was to become an internationally renowned research station eventually to be utilized by students and scientists from many countries.” Dian Fossey set up those two small tents on Sept. 24, 1967, establishing the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda’s Virunga mountains. The Rwandan genocide of 1994 was a tragic period of history as most are aware, causing close to 1,000,000 deaths with over 99.9% of the population being witness to violence and death. Over 300,000 children were made orphans with over 85,000 under 18’s left with the responsibility of looking after their younger siblings. Valentino Achak Deng is a real person, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, now living in Atlanta. Dave Eggers, founder of the McSweeney’s publishing company and bestselling author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, befriended Deng, had many conversations with him, and assumed his voice in order to write What is the What, a fictional biography that hews close to Deng’s true story, but excuses the author to rearrange events for dramatic effect.                                        More
